Robert F. Smith's Initiative To Ease Student Debt At HBCUs

In 2019, the billionaire pledged to pay off the debt of students and their parents of Morehouse College graduates-- $34 million dollars later and the deed was done!

It's 2020 and Smith has upped the ante on giving back to Historically Black Colleges And University's.

The Student Freedom Initiative is a non-profit, aimed at starting the conversation about the burdens that loans can have on Black students and create opportunities for those students who have to start their careers at a later time due to the massive amount of debt attributed by student loans.

The initiative will include up to 5,000 new students each year, launch with a $50 million dollar grant from the Fund II Foundation (Smith's charity organization), and plans to raise at least $500 million dollars by October to make the program self-sustaining.

According to TIME 100,

"The Student Freedom Initiative will launch in Fall 2021 at up to 11 HBCUs, offering juniors and seniors who are science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors a flexible, lower-risk alternative to high-interest private student loans. The list of HBCUs participating in the initial roll-out has not been finalized."

Coronavirus: Experts Say That Cities May Have Opened Up "Too Soon"

It's summertime in the middle of a pandemic and families are torn on whether or not to go on vacation now that certain travel restrictions have lifted or to stay home and keep their distance.

Hotspot travel locations like Myrtle beach in South Carolina and the many beaches in Florida have seen more than a thousand new cases of Coronavirus in the past two weeks.

Government officials are worried that they may have opened their states too soon due to the fear of the economic downfall.

According to the CDC,

"To remain at the lowest risk of getting the virus, staff and beach visitors should maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from people they don't live with and should not share food, equipment, toys or supplies with people they don't live with."

Pro Tip: Continue to wear your mask, social distance, and travel responsibly!

U.S House of Representatives Pass Police Reform Bill That Could Hit A Dead End in Senate

The U.S house of representatives passed a police reform bill aimed at lessening the amount of excessive force used by police officers following the murder of George Floyd--an unarmed Black man who died at the hands of Minneapolis police and Breonna Taylor-- an unarmed Black women shot and killed in her own home by Kentucky police.

Democrats voted almost unanimously one month ago in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act with a 236 to 181 vote to pass the bill which then got sent off to the senate.

This Police Reform Bill has the power to get rid of no-knock warrants and prevent abusive officers from being rehired in another district.

Unfortunately, Republicans have pushed for their own counter proposal to the senate halting any progression for the Police Reform Bill to become a law.
