Dr. Anita Cal is a multi-talented woman who is constantly perfecting her craft while finding ways to innovate and create.
Dr. Cal earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington with hopes of becoming a journalist. While covering sports for a local newspaper and working as an assistant at the Seattle Times her ability to ‘stay ready’ so she didn’t have to ‘get ready’ afforded her the position as an intern at the Seattle Times.
At the young age of 22 years old, Anita was off to Los Angeles to be a reporter for the LA Times. The years that Anita spent during the mentorship program with the LA Times allowed her to travel across the country and guaranteed her a job at the end of the 2-year program.
Exposure is everything when you’re starting out, so Anita took advantage of every opportunity that came her way.
After her time in LA, you couldn’t keep Anita still for too long,
“I saw what they were doing in Hollywood because sometimes I had to cover certain things, and I got the bug…went to grad school…”
Grad school wasn’t what Anita expected but she didn’t let that keep her from creating opportunities for herself,
“I was never someone who just saw school as school…I saw school as a springboard for taking care of business for your career”
Hungry and driven to be successful, Anita’s career continued to flourish. The attitude that Anita took towards her work, landed her roles as a writer, producer, and an award-winning filmmaker.
Anita Cal was busy as ever but still managed to receive her master’s degree and furthered her education by receiving her doctorate at Pepperdine University. Dr. Cal is currently an adjunct professor that teaches at NYU, Syracuse, and UCLA.
The main takeaway from her lecture that I resonated with was the lessons she taught on looking at ourselves (communication majors, broadcasting major) as business people, realizing that school is not just school, and identifying the dysfunctions of a team.
All of the knowledge that Dr. Anita Cal had to drop on us, was something that if she had not told it to us in our zoom lecture, we would only have learned after a great amount of debt in student loans.
Thank you, Dr. Cal, for sharing your experiences with us. I left your zoom call feeling inspired, motivated, and determined to make “lemons” out of “lemonade”.
