LaMyiah Harvel is a force to be reckoned with. Ms. Harvel has been in front of the camera, behind the camera, and on the red carpet prior to her position as a Multimedia Journalist at ABC 7 News in Amarillo, TX.
The Minnesota girl found herself a long way from home in 2014 when she began her journey to journalism at Prairie View A&M University. While "on the hill," LaMyiah discovered her gift of storytelling and passion for creating.
During her college career, LaMyiah was one of the first hosts on PVAMU TV "Roundtable Talk," which was inspired by "Red Table Talk" on Facebook Watch.
LaMyiah had the opportunity to intern at Eyeconic Television in Houston, TX, and Fox 26 while she was still in college. Busy as ever, LaMyiah didn't allow her campus responsibilities to affect her responsibilities as an intern.
The amount of hard work and dedication that LaMyiah showed while interning allowed her to receive real-world industry level experience. From interviewing celebrities on the red carpet for Eyeconic TV to the skills she learned from Fox 26, LaMyiah has taken advantage of every opportunity presented to her and even created a few of her own.
Things were good for LaMyiah until post-graduation depression hit.
After receiving her Bachelor's degree, LaMyiah struggled to find a job and got told "no" by countless news directors.
The amount of "no's" could have stopped her in her tracks, but she knew that her rainy days wouldn't last forever.
Now a Multimedia Journalist for an ABC affiliate, LaMyiah is living out her dreams of storytelling, but Amarillo isn't her last stop. LaMyiah plans to be a talk show host in the future and use her skills of journalism to tell the stories people need to hear.
Every day brings new struggles, but LaMyiah continues to create and be herself no matter the opinions of others.
The biggest takeaway I received from the Zoom lecture with LaMyiah is that you can't give up when things seem impossible because diamonds are made under pressure, and the test of time will show you that you are meant to do the thing everyone said you couldn't.
Thank you, LaMyiah, for sharing the raw, un-cut, story of how you got to where you are and inspiring me never to look back because what's in front of you is what's most important.
